Network science

Toward understanding the interplay between
structures and dynamics

Structures and dynamics of every system, from an online social networking service to a football team, interact with each other. Retweets in Twitter go along with follow relationship and those lead to an act of following to the original author. Similarly, positions of football players and passes between them are strongly related. Network science is an interdisciplinary research field to examine underlying structures, dynamics therein, and relationship between two.

Online games

A real world in miniature

Online game players interact with each other in various ways, as they do in the real world. More importantly, in-game actions could be easily quantified and logged in detail. The huge volume of behavioral data collected from online games helps researchers study human nature in an unprecedented scale.

Computational journalism

Is the world flat? -- We are finding answers from global news media

We have been largely relying on local news media to obtain information of foreign countries. Which countries are more frequently reported than others? Which countries are more positively reported than others? Such patterns unconsciously shape our worldview. With large-scale databases from online news sites, what events are chosen and how they are reported can be quantitatively measured.
